Microsoft ends support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

Microsoft Company plans to end its support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 after January 14th, 2020. This denotes no more support and no security patching from Microsoft. Windows 7 will move the way of Windows XP. As Microsoft planned to make Windows 7 obsolete, it will result the end users to opt Windows 10 with no other choice. In other words, we can consider that Microsoft has provided enough time for end users to think for this eventuality. End users can even make use of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 in PC, but it may result to high vulnerability.

If you are running businesses, you must have a plan on how you are going to prepare for and budget this event. It is recommended that pouring more money into obsolete systems is useless. However, you can upgrade desktops to Windows 10 and servers to at least Windows Server 2012. If you’re going to go through the pain of upgrading, the best solution is to shoot for Windows Server 2016 or Windows Server 2019, as that will give you the most time before the need for further updates.

TechRepublic proposes several few tips to overcome this situation:

  • Ensure whether the system at present is offline or not.
  • If network access is needed, put the system on a separate subset and only permit access for authorized systems. Ensure narrowing the ports to connect to and from this system so that only needed ports are open.
  • Just remove all unnecessary apps and disable any inappropriate services.
  • Ensure this system is not allowed to access the internet unless it is necessary for functionality such as allowing permit access to authorized sites.
  • Regular updates with Anti-malware software

These are a few steps to be taken with precaution as the Microsoft Company stops supporting for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008. You can either upgrade the software to the latest version or get a new one. However, probability for occurrence of chaos may present during this period. You may even develop a plan now to meet this eventuality. Ensure that important applications are supported in the new operating system.

Anyhow, we are going to miss Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 very badly from Jan14th, 2020. Rest in Peace [RIP] for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. You can get more details on how to handle end of the support from the Microsoft Team.
