Report warns that lack of architectural visibility is causing excessive cloud costs

A significant number of global companies surveyed by Boomi, a provider of integration and automation solutions, went over their cloud budgets last year. The issues of excessive storage and bandwidth overconsumption continue to be unresolved for many organizations.

The report, conducted in collaboration with Forrester Research and based on a survey of 420 cloud decision makers worldwide, revealed that while 65% of respondents were prioritizing cloud cost management and optimization (CCMO) tactics, proactive strategies at the architectural level were lacking. Only 40% of respondents said they addressed costs at the solution architecture stage, and a mere 6% claimed their cloud cost remediation strategies were as proactive as needed.

More than half of those surveyed admitted to not having a strategy in place to address excessive storage, with 42% unable to resolve bandwidth overconsumption. Additionally, 44% said they lacked a general integration strategy.

Data management was identified as the most challenging area of cloud spend to track, closely followed by egress fees. The cutthroat competition among hyperscalers such as Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure to eliminate egress fees further complicates the cost management landscape.

The report warned of potential worsening in cloud cost management, with anticipated challenges in IT ops, hybrid work, software creation platforms, and emerging FinOps tools. The research suggested that an integration platform as a service (iPaaS) solution could help reduce overall cloud spending from the architectural stage, emphasizing the significant role that integration plays in managing cloud costs.

Gartner projected iPaaS to be the fastest-growing enterprise software segment in 2022, with key players like Informatica, Microsoft, MuleSoft, Oracle, SAP, and Workato prominently featured in the industry. Boomi, a leader in iPaaS, is well-positioned to address the integration needs of companies struggling with cloud cost management.
