NetApp reveals enhancements to the sole converged storage solution in the industry

NetApp, a software company focused on cloud computing and data storage, has announced updates to its unified data storage solution. These updates include new block storage products, enhancements to public cloud storage services, and improvements to the NetApp Keystone Storage-as-a-Service (STaaS) platform. The goal is to provide customers with simplicity, cost savings, security, and sustainability.

NetApp has been a leader in unified storage for over two decades. Now, they have expanded their definition of unified data storage to encompass file, block, and object workloads. This unified architecture is supported by a common storage operating system, a common API set, and a single control plane. NetApp offers a range of unified storage options, including their flagship all-Flash storage solution (NetApp AFF), the new block-optimized all-Flash storage (NetApp ASA), and cloud-native storage solutions that integrate with the three major public clouds (Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, Microsoft Azure NetApp Files, and Google Cloud NetApp Volumes).

Harv Bhela, Chief Product Officer at NetApp, sees these updates as a way to usher in a new era in data management. The company’s portfolio spans on-premises and public cloud environments, reflecting their commitment to providing unified storage solutions that meet the evolving needs of modern enterprises.

One of the updates focuses on block storage, which is crucial for many mission-critical applications. NetApp introduced the AFF C-Series system earlier this year, which has quickly become their most successful product launch ever. To further serve customers in the block storage market, NetApp introduced the NetApp ASA, which provides enterprise-grade block storage with guaranteed availability and efficiency. The ASA C-Series family, announced at NetApp INSIGHT 2023, offers capacity flash for a balanced combination of performance and cost savings, while maintaining industry-leading sustainability. It also includes features such as storage efficiency guarantees, high data availability, cyber-resilience, and integrated application-aware backup.

NetApp is committed to helping customers transition to their block storage solutions seamlessly. They provide various services at no additional cost, including solution design assessment, data migration support, software licenses, service support during migration, and training workshops.

In addition to block storage enhancements, NetApp continues to enhance their cloud-native storage solutions for the three major public clouds. Notably, Google Cloud NetApp Volumes has been updated with a new Standard service layer, reducing the cost per gigabyte by over 30%. Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP now integrates with VMware Cloud on AWS, allowing for lower total cost of ownership. And Microsoft Azure NetApp Files has improved capacity scaling, enhanced performance for Oracle databases, and support for automated tiering of data to the Azure Cool Blob tier.

NetApp also offers Storage-as-a-Service (STaaS) options through their Keystone platform, which enables customers to consume enterprise storage in a flexible manner. The Keystone STaaS has been enhanced with integrated performance and availability guarantees, as well as sustainability features that help reduce carbon footprints. NetApp plans to introduce a ransomware recovery guarantee for Keystone in the near future.

Industry experts, like Ashish Nadkarni from IDC, acknowledge NetApp’s ongoing efforts to drive innovation in enterprise storage and public cloud solutions. The company’s unified data storage portfolio addresses customer demand for simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability.
